We knew he would fit RIGHT in here at GOOL when we saw all his drag photos from yester-year on his site so we asked him a few questions that we knew all you GOOL readers were dying to know!
GOOL: Of the women that you profile in your new book Eccentric Glamour, whom would you most like to honor with a drag impersonation?
SD: If I wasn't such a midget it would be Tilda. Since I'm half her height, I don't think I could do her justice. I will settle for Lucy Liu.... especially since she is the most beautiful of all the chicks in my book.
GOOL: How many times have you made Jonathan Adler [Simon's partner of 10 years] dress up as Demi Moore so you two can reenact the sexy pottery scene from Ghost?
SD: We have re-enacted this many times with disastrous results. It usually ends up being a lot more like Mia Farrow and Ruth Gordon in Rosemary's Baby...if you know what I mean.
GOOL: Being one of the people we look up to for creative inspiration, what is inspiring you now?
SD: I am having a major 60's hippie moment. This year is the 50th anniversary of the PEACE SIGN..maybe that's the reason.
GOOL: In a New York Observer article you once dissed Abercrombie and Fitch. We here at GOOL have been on a crusade against cargos (cargo shorts) since the site’s inception. What is your feeling about what we call “cargo clones” and the gayz’ love affair with Abercrombie and Fitch?
SD: This is a personal thing. A and F looks great on certain (tall and young) blokes. I would look like a troll from hell. I need to be neat and buttoned up. If I wear Cargo pants all those bulges make it look as if I'm wearing multiple colostomy bags.
GOOL: You just interviewed Madonna for the May issue of Elle. We, like most Gayz, are obsessed with Madge. In fact, we have recurring dreams in which we are friends with THE lady. What detail of that day will forever stick out in your head?
SD: I was struck by how glam her life is: her mansion, her art, her retinue.....girlfriend is living like an old time movie star.
GOOL: Summer is right around the corner and we are endorsing short shorts just like many designers did on the runway. How do you recommend pulling the look off? Are there certain people that can’t pull it off?
A Spring look by Marc by Marc Jacobs
SD: The most important accessory is CONFIDENCE. I love to see fat people strutting their stuff in skimpy clothes. God never said that the World should belong to THIN PEOPLE.
GOOL: Being as it is an election year, what is your plan to achieve peace between the fashion challenged Chelsea Gayz and those Gayz with a more progressive sense of style, “the Fashion Gayz,” an ever-present struggle.
SD: The fashionable gays need the unfashionable ones in order to feel groovy and be fashionable. They should be grateful to their fashion-challenged sisters. If everybody were fashionable then there would be no point in dressing up. There would be no sizzle...and we all love a bit of sizzle!
Thanks Simon!
