A Sad Day for GOOL!
An Open Letter From Shania Rendezvous:
Dear Gayz Of Our Lives Readers,
I have decided to officially retire on March 29th, 2008 at The Night of 1000 Gowns. Look out for my last sitting/print interview in Next (out Friday)! Not that this is a shock to anyone since my performance/appearance schedule has dwindled down to an event every few months. Since GOOL has been so incredibly supportive of my drag career, I wanted to give GOOL readers the exclusive on why am I retiring.
First and foremost, it is simply time. Next year will be the 10th anniversary of being "Shania Rendezvous" and in all honesty, I didn't think drag and me would continue post-25 but I found "Shania" was harder to let go of than I ever imagined. It was never my intention for Shania to be my full-time career. Drag was a fun way for me to express myself with my love of dance, performance, and fashion but behind the scenes no one saw how much time it took to choose music, rehearse, style my outfits, hair, makeup, etc.
In 2006, I hit my plateau of popularity—I was performing several times a week, getting incredible press, developed a small, loyal following, I even filled in for my idol Candis Cayne—that in itself, was a small dream come true. I realized how much energy I was giving to Shania and not to Shane. I knew in my heart there was not much further I could go without making "Shania" my full-time job.
I decided to go on a "sabbatical" in late 2006, which I never really came back from. I focused on my career, personal life, and emotional health—all of which are fantastic. In order for me to be ready to retire, I had to go through my own internal process of letting her go.
After much deliberation, I decided that there is no better time than the present. I thought about throwing a big goodbye party, but no event was appropriate. I decided a quiet retirement is best at The Night of 1000 Gowns.
Shania has been an amazing source of fun and has allowed me to indulge in all my wildest fantasies but I've always been a person to live in the present with what is real and tangible—that is what I want to focus on. While I will miss her incredibly, it is now time to focus on making Shane's dreams come true rather than hers.
I want to thank you all, especially Sam, for your AMAZING support, the cheers, and the love you have given her. Shania would have been nothing without GOOL and it's readers. I hope that you all can continue to be part of Shane's life and not just Shania's. I love you all very much.
Love,
Shania Rendezvous
All we've gotta say is...
We wish Shanasty the best in her new home of Boca!
